UNCLOGGING YOUR ARTERIES

Unclogging your arteries does not sound like the typical newsletter topic for me, does it. However, this has been the topic of much discussion at my home since the New Year. I labeled this year "The Year of Organization" for our household. Stick with me as I share with you the connection between getting my household organized and unclogging my arteries.

I'm going to share with you a secret. I am neat and tidy and look together on the outside, but if you check in my closets, under my beds and in my drawers and cupboards and, heaven forbid in my purse, you will see a whole other side to me. This is the side that annoys my husband the most. Tom is a detail man. His solution to most problems is to create a spreadsheet. (This is a source of humor at our home.) Got a problem, create a spreadsheet. While I appreciate Tom's thought that putting things in order can solve most problems, I have chosen to live in a bit of disarray. I tend to fly by the seat of my pants. This has caused much frustration as things can't be found, schedules get messed up and things fall through the cracks. Does this sound familiar?

As 2008 rolled in I determined I was going to make some organizational changes. I have painted my office and in doing so, created a much more organized working place. I can now say, "You'll find it......" when someone is looking for something. Part of becoming organized is also checking things off my list that I have been avoiding. This is where the unclogging of the arteries comes in. I have found that as I do those things that I've avoided, and I create a place of order, I feel as though I am walking with a lighter step. I work out more, eat better, sleep better and have more time to just "be" with my family.

How does one begin the process of unclogging their arteries?

1. Make a list of the areas that need organizing. (Perhaps a spreadsheet WOULD come in handy....don't tell Tom I said so.)

2. Make a list of the things you have been procrastinating on.

3. Prioritize your lists.

4. Start at the beginning and begin checking them off. Enlist help from your family so they can feel a sense of ownership to the organization in your household. If they help put together an organizational system they are more apt to keep it in place. If you need a friend's help, ask. People love to feel needed and you might just have fun.

As you check things off you begin to feel the unclogging and the freedom begins to set in.

These steps probably don't sound very profound to you. They are just 4 easy steps you've probably heard before. But they can become nuggets of freedom for you if choose to use them. Make 2008 a year of organization for YOUR household. I promise you will feel as though you have just had your arteries unclogged. Enjoy a year full of freedom and health!

RECIPE

Healthy Chicken & Apples In a CrockPot

Prep Time: 25 minutes

Cook Time: 7 hours,

Ingredients:

  • 6 oz. can frozen orange juice concentrate, thawed
  • 1/2 tsp. dried marjoram leaves
  • 1/8 tsp. ground nutmeg
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 6 boneless skinless chicken breasts
  • 3 Grany smith apples, cored and sliced
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 2 Tbsp. cornstarch

Preparation:

In small bowl, combine thawed orange juice concentrate (do not use regular orange juice!), marjoram, and nutmeg. Place onions and garlic in bottom of 3-4 quart slow cooker. Dip each chicken breast into the orange mixture to coat and place in crockpot over onions. Pour any remaining orange juice mixture over the chicken. Cover and cook on low for 6-7 hours until chicken is almost cooked. Add apples and cook one hour longer on low until apples are tender and chicken is thoroughly cooked.
