Food For Thought......

IDENTIFYING THE HEART OF YOUR LIFE AND BUSINESS

Do you have yellow lines?

Recently, as life started distracting me from my business, and in distraction I mean (kids, visitors, a move, etc) I found that my vision for my business was getting cloudy because I was crossing the “yellow lines” in my life. What happens when you cross the yellow lines on the road…..it becomes dangerous. You can get hit by on coming traffic. So I had to revisit my yellow lines.

By “yellow lines”, I mean the non-negotiables in my life that I have set up based on my priorities and values. My priorities are God, my family, my friends and THEN my business. (Remember, these are MY priorities. Yours may look very different.) These yellow lines are areas where I cannot be moved…..or shouldn’t be moved. They are the yellow lines in my calendar. Things that are highlighted in yellow that are non-negotiable. These are the HEART of my life and business.

For me to have a productive, successful day, I need to make sure I don’t cross those yellow lines. If I keep these lines solid, they help keep me moving down the road safely and with a vision in mind. I’m moving productively and with purpose. AND, most of all, I’m moving with a healthy body and spirit.

A quote I read once said, "We always have time enough, if we will but use it right.”

Recently I had a conversation with my 10 year old about all the balls I have tossing in the air at any given time. He was giving me a hard time because amongst all of our errands on this particular day we came home to make dad a lunch to take to him and as we headed back out I had forgotten the lunch on the counter. After he was done razzing me I asked him, “Luke, what are you thinking about right now?” He said, “about eating my grapes.” I then shared with him the MANY things I was thinking about and responsible for today. I told him that if I happen to drop a ball now and then it is only because I have so many up in the air. The trick, I went on, is to make sure all the balls I have in the air are necessary and profitable. Because Luke, all things are permissible, but not all things are profitable. Each day I have to make sure my yellow lines are in tact. Each day I have to decide what is the most profitable toward the values and goals of this family.

Luke looked at me with his sparkling eyes and said, “I have more balls going than I thought………I’m also thinking about eating my sandwich and chips. I think these are important balls to be juggling too.”

So, my object lesson might have been wasted on a 10 year old, but hopefully it has not been wasted on you.

Apple Chicken Quesadillas

Kids will gobble these up!

RECIPE INGREDIENTS

4 Flour tortillas (approximately 8-inches wide)
1 cup cooked, shredded or chopped, chicken meat
1/4 lb cheddar or Monterey jack cheese, sliced or grated
1 apple, sliced
1/4 cup salsa

1. Heat a large skillet on medium high heat. Place one tortilla in the skillet. Flip it a couple of times with a spatula, then let it sit in the pan heating up until air pockets form and parts of the tortilla begin to puff up. Flip it again.

2. Place cheese slices on half of the tortilla, at least 1/2-inch from the edge of the tortilla. Add chicken pieces on top of the cheese. Fold the tortilla over like an omelet, and press down on the folded tortilla with the spatula. Lower the heat to medium. At this point, if you have enough room in your skillet, you can add a second tortilla to the pan to begin to heat it up.

3. When the cheese inside the quesadilla has melted, remove the quesadilla to a cutting board. Open it wide and layer on apple slices and salsa. Fold the tortilla back again, and cut it into 3 triangles, as if you were cutting a pie. (You don't have to cut the quesadilla into triangles, it just makes it easier for kids to eat.)

4 Repeat with the remaining tortillas.

Makes 12 quesadilla triangles.
