Food For Thought......

THE THRILL OF CLIMBING A 14er

My husband, Tom, loves to climb "14ers". For those of you that are unfamiliar with that term, that means mountains that are 14,000 feet above sea level or higher. He has climbed four in the last few years. He has now climbed Pikes Peak in Colorado Springs twice.

I live very close to Pikes Peak which is 14,110 feet above sea level. Halfway up the Barr Trail that takes you to the top of Pikes Peak they have a stopping place where you can rest and purchase food. Tom knows I am motivated by having something at the end of my journey so he has been trying to talk me into at least making the 7,400 feet high journey and then having a "treat". Up until recently I could have been quoted as saying, "NOT GONNA HAPPEN!" My mindset, however, is beginning to change.

Recently I was given a clear vision of how working my home business is much like climbing a "14er". Perhaps you have your own "14er" you are climbing; debt to be paid off, weight to be lost, a difficult child to raise, a relationship to mend. We all have our mountains.

In the past I have compared the pace of my business with running a marathon, but I have begun to see it more clearly as a slow ascent up a VERY large mountain. I know that at the top it is going to be beautifully breathtaking. Imagine what is at the end of your mountain. I started the ascent almost three years ago without much thought about how much work it was going to be to get to the top. I just knew I wanted to get there. I put my head down and began placing one foot in front of the other, taking the steps necessary to reach my destination.

I have made the 7,400 foot climb of Pike's Peak with my business. I am doing well, but I am only halfway there. I have been resting for a long time at the concession stand enjoying the doughnuts, trying to get the guts and determination to make the rest of the journey. Instead of keeping my head down and moving forward I looked up and saw how much further I had to go. I became content with the refreshments. I became fearful that I couldn't make the journey. My fear paralyzed me. Perhaps some of you have felt that way along your climb.

Now that I have recognized where I have been and seen the time I have wasted, I am determined to put my head down again and start the ascent. My fears have been put aside. I am once again a person of action and I have a decided heart. Many people fail at whatever they attempt because of an undecided heart. Should I? Should I not? Go forward? Go back? Success requires the emotional balance of a committed heart. A committed heart searches for a solution. A undecided heart searches for an escape. I am no longer looking for a way down.

Throughout my years of hiking with my husband I know how easy it is to say, "I'll just stay here with Luke (my youngest) and you go to the top and I'll meet you back here." Or, "I just can't go any further because it's too hot (I hate the heat)." Believe me, I have come up with many excuses over the 20 years I have been married to "Mr. Determination." But if I want to make it to the top of my mountain, there can be no more excuses! From many other hiking journeys where I have made it to the top, I know how good it feels once you get to the end.

So my question to you is.........."Are you ready to make the ascent of the last 7,000 feet of your mountain? Or, are you content at the concession stand?" I personally did not climb 7,400 feet to sit and get fat on concession food. I will persist without exception. The faith I have in this journey allows me to see that mountain top before I've even been there. Recall what your moutain top looks like and cling to that view.

Join me as we put our heads down, move forward, and ascend whatever mountain top we have been given.
